Liverpool … UNITED… States

On our last day in Dublin we planned to experience world soccer. Having just come off the World Cup where we were drawn to watch the lead in to the semi- finals and finals, we were intrigued that an exhibition game between Liverpool and Napoli was taking place at the Aviva in Dublin. Well.. what an experience.

Our hotel was planned within walking distance to the stadium. We were a little uncertain of the route… no worries … img_0946we could just follow the 51,510 other friends dressed in the Standard Charter Liverpool red marching toward the stadium. The air is electric. It is almost indescribable. Elderly people with walkers, people in wheelchairs, families with young children all donning M.Salah 11 or Forino on their red jerseys walked to the stadium. Business men courting clients, others wearing their local club jerseys but buying a scarf, flag or horn for the game headed to the game.

The stadium is impressive with waves of glass and steel. While pubs lined the walk in, the stadium seats prohibited alcohol keeping the crowd much more civilized. Around us were the die-hard fans. Liverpool prevailed mightily. We were amused by the children who narrated the game and the players backstories to their dads, so happy to be present. Despite the blow out (5-0) you might think it a nail- biter as the crowd was fully invested!img_3407

When the game ended we flooded out into the streets, a jovial spirit in the air. Our B&B hostess from Kilkenny had told us about a restaurant, Roly’s not far from the stadium. Foodies unite!

If the game was an experience, the dinner was an event. img_3423We dined the night away. We were among the last tables occupied while the glow of candlelight flickered. We shared the aged t-bone for two which melted in your mouth. A wonderful béarnaise added a piquancy to the taste. The hand cut chips, cherry tomatoes and greens were scrumptious. We shared the Skellig chocolate plate and a coffee. The sweets were divine. Four different tastes to sample.

We walked the the 15 minutes back the schoolhouse hotel. The street was peaceful and the air was pleasant and warm. Such a wonderful way to close out our trip. Off the airport in the morning. Already thinking of what new adventures we’ll have.
